BMJ Case Rep Published online: [please include Day Month Year] doi:10.1136/bcr-2016217953 DESCRIPTION A 9-year-old boy presented with the history of progressive pain, watering and abduction limitation for 1-week duration. Medical history revealed two episodes of recurrent congestion on the nasal side and watering 2 and 4 week’s prior. On examination visual acuity was 20/200 improving to 20/40 with refraction and 20/20 in right and left eye, respectively; extraocular motility was severely restricted in abduction and elevation with minimal restriction in depression and adduction (figure 1). Fundus examination showed localised choroidal mount on the nasal retina without any intraocular cyst. Ultrasonography of the orbit revealed a large cyst in the medial rectus muscle with peripheral high amplitude spike echo (figure 2A). Subsequent CT imaging of the head and neck showed a well-defined large cyst in medial rectus indenting the globe with a peripheral high amplitude dot, without any intracranial foci (figure 2B). Both the ultrasonography and CT features suggested myocysticercosis with peripheral scolex.

CT in the diagnosis of isolated cysticercal infestation of extraocular muscle.

AIM To evaluate the use of computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound (US) to diagnose orbital cysticercosis, and present the diagnostic features. METHOD US and CT were used to evaluate patients with proptosis. Four patients were diagnosed as having orbital myocysticercosis and treated with oral albendazole and corticosteroid. Follow-up was undertaken with US and CT. RESULT US features were co...

Unusual presentation of orbital cysticercosis-ptosis, diminution of vision and medial rectus weakness: a case report

Cysticercosis is the most common parasitic disease of the nervous system. The disease occurs when humans become the intermediate host in the life cycle of Taenia solium by ingesting its eggs from contaminated food. The most common sites of involvement of cysticerci are soft tissue, eye and central nervous system. Unusual location of the cysts may result in uncommon manifestations. Ocular cystic...

Assessment of Medial and Inferior Extraocular Muscle Thickness by Ultrasonography in Juvenile Patients with Graves’ Disease

In juvenile patients with Graves’ disease, extraocular muscles may be involved. Ultrasonography is a very important and informative diagnostic method in patients with exophthalmos and Graves’ disease. The aim of our study was to evaluate medial and inferior extraocular muscle thickness in juvenile patients with Graves’ disease. Materials and methods: Ultrasonography was performed on 78 orbits o...

Ptosis: a rare presentation of ocular cysticercosis.

BACKGROUND Cysticercosis is a common parasitic infection involving multiple systems and caused by Cysticercus cellulosae, the larval form of the cestode, Taenia solium. The humans become infected by ingesting its eggs from contaminated food. Here, we present a case of ocular cysticercosis which presented with mild pain, ptosis, inflammation of upper eyelid and slightly restricted ocular motilit...

Computed tomography of blow-out fracture of the medial orbital wall.

Computed tomographic (CT) findings in four patients with isolated blow-out fracture of the medial orbital wall are reported. CT delineated the fracture site and its extent in each case, and clearly demonstrated medial rectus muscle entrapement in two. This was confirmed by surgery. CT was found superior to poly tomography and proved to be the best radiologic means for the diagnosis of medial or...
